Robert Stone (1937-2015) Tribute List

Robert Stone, a novelist of gritty realism and lofty ideas, died on January 10, 2015 at the age of 77. Stone won the National Book Award in 1975 for Dog Soldiers, his novel about Vietnam and the drug trade, and while the moral concerns raised in that novel would continue to interest him, he was a lot more than a "Vietnam Novelist" or a novelist of "the late 60s." There is an old saying that good writers make writing look easy, but the work of Robert Stone is evidence against this- in his best work, you can feel him grappling with big issues, sense the struggle in his prose,and his books are all the better for it.
